AI Referral Traffic: Clicks That Never Sign Up

Sep 25, 2026•Updated Sep 30, 2026•Wlad

AI referral traffic is a click from a known assistant host, not proof an answer cited you. We group visits whose referrer is chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, or copilot.microsoft.com. I built that panel because a branded bump in Search Console kept getting blamed on a chat I could not see. The useful question is smaller. Did that host show up, and did a goal fire after it?

Google's default channel group names an AI Assistant channel for clicks from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot. That channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google's list of assistants is wider than the five hosts we group. AI features and your website is the other half. Google still counts AI Overviews inside web search. On our side, AI referral traffic is the assistant referrer. It is not a mention inside an overview.

What it includes

The SEO tab reads two facts. First, robots.txt on your domain: whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Copilot can fetch /, plus Gemini via Google-Extended. Second, visits whose referrer host is one of those products. Refresh works from an app domain before Search Console is connected.

That is crawl permission plus a visit. The referrer string sits on the event. Raw events last 30 days on Free and 90 days on Standard and Professional. The panel does not store the prompt.

Google-Extended is not Google AI Overviews. I keep those names apart on purpose. Blocking one does not switch off the other. The longer limit is in how brand positioning affects AI search visibility.

A click still has to reach a goal

A row for ChatGPT is a session that kept the referrer. It is not a signup. Mark the button with data-ed-goal. Then the same path can show the host and the goal.

If the host appears and the goal stays at zero, the landing page failed the visit. That is the same class of miss as Search Console clicks with no signup. Rankings did not break. The page did not ask for the action, or the action is not marked.

If the panel is empty, do not conclude you were skipped. Many answers send no referrer. The reader may type your name and show up as a branded query two days later in Search Console. Daily totals lag about two days. An empty AI row plus a rising branded query is a hint, not a citation score.

What we will not call AI referral traffic

  • No prompt and no answer text. We do not read what the model said.
  • No share of voice. There is no competitor citation chart.
  • No AI Overview breakout. Those clicks stay inside Search Console web search, as Google describes on the AI features page.
  • No proof from a zero. Zero matching referrers is a normal week.

Search Console analytics is still the join of clicks to goals. AI referral traffic is the smaller table beside it.

Check the host, then the goal

Setup for the SEO tab is in the Search Console docs. The tab is on every plan, including Free. Pricing is the retention split. Start free if you want the referrer groups before you connect Search Console.

Key takeaways

  • AI referral traffic is a visit from chatgpt.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, or copilot.microsoft.com.
  • Google Analytics puts those clicks in an AI Assistant channel. Google AI Overviews stay in ordinary organic search.
  • We group the same hosts and can show whether a goal fired. Empty referrers are common.
  • A citation with no click is invisible. Blocking Google-Extended does not turn off AI Overviews.

FAQ

What is AI referral traffic?
AI referral traffic is a visit whose referrer host is chatgpt.com, chat.openai.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai, or copilot.microsoft.com. We group those hosts on the SEO tab. Google Analytics calls a similar slice the AI Assistant channel. It is a click someone made. It is not a citation, and it does not include Google AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Does zero AI referral traffic mean the answer never cited us?
No. Many AI answers send no referrer, so the next visit looks direct, or the reader never clicks. We cannot see the prompt, the answer text, or the citation list. Zero on the AI search panel means no matching referrer in the window you opened.
How is this different from Google AI Overviews?
Google counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as ordinary web search, not as a separate assistant channel. We read those clicks inside Search Console web search. The robots.txt check for Gemini is Google-Extended. That switch is not a control for AI Overviews.
Can EventDash show whether the AI visit signed up?
Yes, when the referrer arrived and a data-ed-goal fired on that path. Raw events last 30 days on Free and 90 days on Standard and Professional. If the host is present and the goal count is zero, the landing page is the next check, not another citation tool.
